Throbbing Gristle -- Heathen Earth, ?
This record isn't new, per se, but it's new to my consciousness. Heathen Earth is an in-the-studio document of Throbbing Gristle's live spontaneous creativity. The thing I love about TG is the underlying current of evil in their music. Like the Butthole Surfers, there is something horrific yet ambiguous lurking in each song. An entity waiting for a chance to break through the gates and fatally maul the listener. The ghosts that float out of the speakers wi th the sounds become very real and very scary. Never before has a band fully lived up to its name. What does Throbbing Gristle sound like? Imagine smooth electronic humming that can turn schizo at any given moment, swelling noises that move with the pulses of your body, and grinding rhythms that walk allover you with hobnail boots. The British Parliment called them "The wreckers of civilisation" and I call them geniuses. If you've never heard them, I call you stupid. Get your ass to the nearest import section and call forth the forces of Chaos. -Greg Chapman |
